What is Uvinul A Plus?

Uvinul A Plus (INCI: Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, also called DHHB) is a modern chemical UV filter developed by BASF and approved in the EU in 2005. It's designed specifically to target long-wave UVA1 radiation (340–400 nm) — the part of the UV spectrum that penetrates deepest into skin and causes photoaging, DNA damage, melasma, and pigmentation disorders. It covers roughly the same UVA range as avobenzone but with a crucial advantage: it's photostable. While avobenzone breaks down in sunlight and needs stabilizers like octocrylene to keep working, Uvinul A Plus stays effective throughout the day without degradation.

Like the Tinosorb filters, Uvinul A Plus is not FDA-approved in the US, so it's absent from American sunscreens. It's widely available in European, Australian, Japanese, and Indian formulations.

Why is Uvinul A Plus so well tolerated?

Uvinul A Plus has an excellent safety profile. The molecule is relatively large (molecular weight around 398 Da) and shows minimal skin penetration. Patch test data show very few cases of contact dermatitis. The EU Scientific Committee has confirmed its safety at up to 10%.

Key points:

  • No photodegradation — Uvinul A Plus is stable under UV exposure and doesn't lose effectiveness through the day.
  • Combines beautifully with other filters — Works synergistically with Tinosorb S, Tinosorb M, and Uvinul T 150 in modern European sunscreen blends.
  • Hypoallergenic — Suitable for sensitive, reactive, and rosacea-prone skin.
  • Pregnancy — No specific concerns have been flagged; generally considered acceptable in pregnancy, though mineral filters remain the most conservative choice.
  • Minimal absorption — Lower systemic absorption than older filters like homosalate and octinoxate.

In Indian products 🇮🇳

Uvinul A Plus is present in several premium European sunscreens sold in India, and increasingly in newer Indian D2C formulations. Popular products: La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400, Avène Very High Protection, Bioderma Photoderm Max SPF 50+, Eucerin Sun Gel-Cream, ISDIN FotoUltra, Heliocare 360, and Daylong Ultra. Indian D2C brands beginning to use Uvinul A Plus: Brinton Safe Sun Matte Finish, Dermatica Broad Spectrum, Re'equil Oxybenzone-Free Sunscreen, and newer Foxtale and Dot & Key formulations.

Indian-context use cases:

  • Melasma — Uvinul A Plus's UVA1 specialty makes it one of the best filters for melasma-prone Indian skin. Combined with Tinosorb S, it gives unmatched long-wave UVA protection.
  • Photoaging prevention — For users in their 30s and older concerned with wrinkles, sagging, and sun damage, UVA1 protection is essential.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — Protects darkening acne marks from getting worse.
  • Long daily exposure — For outdoor workers and users with long commutes, photostability ensures protection lasts.
  • Sensitive skin with pigmentation — One of the gentlest options for users who need strong UVA protection without irritation.
  • Pregnancy melasma (chloasma) — Helps prevent worsening of pregnancy-related pigmentation.

The La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 formula, which combines Uvinul A Plus with Tinosorb S, Tinosorb M, and Mexoryl 400, is considered by Indian dermatologists to be one of the best sunscreens in the world for melasma and pigmentation care.

How to use Uvinul A Plus well

  1. Look for it in premium European brands — Check ingredient lists for "Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate" or "DHHB".
  2. Combine with Tinosorb filters — The pairing gives unmatched broad-spectrum protection.
  3. Reapply every 2–3 hours outdoors — Photostability is not the same as permanence.
  4. Apply generously — Two finger-lengths for face and neck.
  5. Essential for melasma protocols — UVA1 protection is the linchpin of successful melasma treatment.

Safer alternatives

  • For the most complete protection: Uvinul A Plus + Tinosorb S + Tinosorb M blends.
  • For pregnancy: Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide for maximum caution.
  • For budget: Avobenzone + octocrylene combinations are much cheaper and still effective when stabilized.
  • For US-only availability: Zinc oxide mineral sunscreens (since Uvinul A Plus isn't FDA-approved).
